Class 6

Spring

What have we learnt so far this term?

Communication

Literacy  - Snail Trail - Ruth Brown

We are learning about the story ‘Snail trail’, where we have explored exciting sensory experiences linked to different environments the snail travels through.  Some of us have identified the different environments linked to the story i.e. hills, flowers, forests using symbols.  We have all been doing some fantastic mark-making using different tools and materials linked to the story. Our communication focus has been about making choices between different resources to explore. We have been using a range of communication methods to do this including vocalisation, reaching out for items and symbols. During our cooking lessons we have been following short instructions for example mix the mixture, chop the fruit.

Literacy  - Mad About Minibeasts - Giles Andeae

Next half term we will be learning about the different minibeast poems in the book ‘Mad about Minibeasts’. We will be exploring and identifying the different minibeasts as we look at a range of poems. We will continue to develop our mark-making using minibeasts as our theme.  During communication we will have opportunities to make requests for more of items we like and communicate stop or finished for items we don’t like, to develop our core language skills.

Maths

Mathematics - We are learning about number, length and height and time.

We have experienced a range of exciting number songs linked to our topic of minibeasts including 5 little caterpillars, 5 little butterflies and the ants go marching.  We have used physical objects to act out the number rhymes, used 1:1 correspondence with the objects and also identified numbers 1-10.  In length and height we have participated in long and short activities such as making long and short caterpillars and worms out of playdough.

PSHE

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED) -

We are learning about our special people through the book ‘The Great Big Book of Families’. We are identifying people who are special including ourselves and people in school. We have been looking at photographs of ourselves and people in our class. We have made friendship bracelets for our friends to show them they are special to us.

Understanding the World

Understanding the World (Science) We are learning about different animals and habitats including those that live on land, in the air and in the sea. Through sensory experiences we have been exploring which animals live in which habitats. We have been identifying animals and habitats using symbols and photographs.

Understanding the world (Geography)  - Next half term we will be learning about which minibeasts and other animals live in our school grounds. Through fieldwork we will observe which minibeast we can find and explore their habitats. We will then be building our own minibeast hotels and seeing which minibeasts come to live in them.

RE

Understanding the world (RE) -

We are learning about how different religions and non-religious people welcome babies home.  We have been learning about Humanist naming ceremonies.  We have decorated our own candles, taken part in a sand blending ceremony and have been exploring the tree of promise.  Next half term we will be learning about Islamic and Christian baby ceremonies and how babies are welcomed into their faith.

Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive Arts and Design (Drama) We are recreating different clips including the Ugly Bug Ball, Bug’s Life and Flight of the Bumblebee.  We are learning skills around performing different actions linked to the clips.  We have enjoyed making costumes ad props to recreate these clips and then using the different areas of school to perform our actions. Our project is to create a video performance to be shown at the Delius theatre.

Expressive Arts and Design (Art) -  Next half term we will be exploring Bradford the City of Culture and the different landmarks we have in Bradford. We will then be making marks onto images of the buildings and create our own landscape of Bradford.

Physical Development

Physical Development (PE)  We are learning about creating movements using scarves and parachutes.  We are using different actions with our scarves to recreate the lifecycle of a butterfly.  Next half term we will be using the parachute to move in time to music and follow different actions and instructions as a class.
