What have we learnt so far this term?

Understanding the World

We are learning about Ocean and Woodland habitats.  We are using our 5 senses to experience different stimuli linked to the habitats, such as seaweed, fish and grass.  Some of us are comparing the two habitats using symbols and sorting animals into the correct habitat.

(Geography)  - Next half term we will be learning about stimuli linked to ‘In the garden’, such as animals, stones and weeds.  We are additionally comparing man made objects such as plant pots and swings with natural objects such as grass and soil.  We will do this by demonstrating persistence with the stimuli and identifying the different objects using symbols.

Communication, Language and Literacy

Literacy  - Nature Trail by Benjamin Zephaniah

We are learning about the story ‘Nature trail’, where we have experienced exciting stimuli linked to in the garden and minibeasts.  Some of us have identified objects linked to the story i.e. frogs, flowers, soil using symbols.  Whilst some have been using nouns and verbs in their sentences to talk about the story.

Literacy  - Ten Seeds - Ruth Brown

Next half term we will be learning about the story ‘Ten Seeds’, where we will be growing our very own plants using seeds, water, soil and sunlight.  We will also be identifying different animals you would find in the garden like those in the story using symbols.

Maths

We are learning about number, length and height and time.

We have experienced a range of exciting number songs through the use of our immersive room, such as ‘5 currant buns’ and ‘10 green bottles’.  We have used physical objects to act out the number rhymes, used 1:1 correspondence with the objects and also identified numbers 1-10.  In length and height we have participated in long and short activities such as new age kurling and comparing different animals using symbols.

PSED

We are learning about different types of families through the book ‘All Kinds of Families’.  We have been looking at photographs of people in our family and identifying who lives in our house.  Through sensory activities, we have learnt about what our families help us do such as getting dressed, brushing our teeth and playing with toys.

RE

We are learning about ‘Celebrations’.  We have been comparing special clothes, party food and music to everyday clothes, food and music.  We have done this by showing different reactions to the stimuli, and sorting symbols.  We have also been learning about Chinese New Year, by experiencing the year of the snake.  We have used our senses to engage in different sensory activities linked to the celebration, and identified key parts using symbols.

Next half term we will be learning about birthday celebrations making celebration and cakes and creating our very own birthday party menus.

Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive Arts and Design (Drama) We are learning about ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’.  We are learning skills around performance and using our voices in different ways.  Some of us are recounting key events of the story such as coming out of the leaf, and becoming a butterfly.  Our project is to create a video performance to be shown at the Delius theatre.

Expressive Arts and Design (Art) -  Next half term we will be creating our very own plant pots in Art.  We will be doing this through exploring clay and its sensory qualities with different actions such as pinching, rolling and squeezing.  We will be forming our plants pots out of air dry clay and will be purposefully decorating it using a range of tools.

Physical Development

Physical Development (PE)  We are learning about creating movements to express our feelings.  We are using the songs ‘There’s a worm at the bottom of my garden’ and ‘The Butterfly dance’ to move in different ways such as crawling, slithering, and rolling.  Next half term we will be taking part in bean bag dances, where we will experience games such as bean bag boogie, mexican bean bag dance, pass the bean bag.
